| My name is Michael Barker and I'm unstuck in the world. Which is the best way I know to describe myself. I was born in Blackbottom in Detroit in 1952. This, if you know anything about race in America, was not the best start in life you can imagine. I compounded all this by being nearly unteachable. This is to say, I was a failure in ghetto schools and mostly a failure at ghetto life, in general. I managed to be an outsider in a segregated subculture. Where, I ask you, can a person go from there? Well, up! Some how all the wrong turns of my life seemed to add up to what I needed and I think I'll probably finish up with a smile. |
